    # Rome Turns Pink on 31 May: A Practical Guide to the 2026 Giro d’Italia Grande Arrivo

    Sunday 31 May, Rome closes the Giro d’Italia for the fourth consecutive year. It is the eighth Roman finale in the history of the Corsa Rosa, but the first to feel like a genuine routine: four years in a row means the concluding parade on the Circo Massimo circuit is no longer an experiment — it is a tradition. For anyone in Rome that Sunday, it is a day when the city changes its face entirely: traffic blocked through the centre, barriers along the Forums, a colourful crowd moving on foot between Piazza del Popolo and the Circo Massimo.

    If you are planning a stay in our apartments in the historic centre, here is what to expect and how to make the most of the day.

    The finale has become a tradition

    The Roman finish of the Giro began as a novelty in 2023 and immediately established itself as one of the most-watched sporting events in the capital. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri speaks of an estimated economic impact exceeding 100 million euros per year. For those in the city, the value is something else entirely: watching the peloton pass a few metres away, beneath the Colosseum, with no ticket required.

    The route: from EUR to the Circo Massimo, eight times past the monuments

    Stage 21 covers 131 kilometres with barely 500 metres of elevation gain. It is a flat stage, designed above all to be a spectacle, with a high probability of a sprint finish.

    The Fori Romani at dusk: the final stage circuit passes here eight times.

    The day begins at the EUR, in Quadrato della Concordia. After sign-on between 13:55 and 15:25, the official start is at 15:40. The peloton heads down towards Ostia along the Cristoforo Colombo, brushes the sea, then turns back towards the centre.

    The heart of the stage is the 9.5-kilometre circuit repeated eight times within the city walls. It winds beneath the Colosseum, past the Terme di Caracalla, and threads through short stretches of cobblestones that test the sprinters’ wheels. The finishing straight on Via del Circo Massimo is 350 metres of eight-metre-wide asphalt: the final 150 metres kick up 5%, which can change the balance of a sprint entirely.

    The finish is expected at around 18:45.

    Practical times to note

    TimeWhat’s happening
    13:00–18:30**Giroland** in Piazza del Popolo (fan zone, entertainment, big screens)
    13:55–15:25Sign-on, Quadrato della Concordia (EUR)
    15:40Official start from EUR
    ~18:45Expected finish at Circo Massimo

    Add a good hour of lead time if you want a decent spot along the circuit or near the finish line.

    Where to watch (for free)

    Eight passes on the circuit means eight chances to see the peloton up close. Your options depend on how much you want to be in the thick of the crowd.

    • Via dei Fori Imperiali. The most photographed backdrop, with the Colosseum behind. Expect large crowds from the early afternoon. Best to position yourself by 15:00 on the side of the Foro di Traiano.
    • Terme di Caracalla. The most scenic stretch after the Forums, usually less crowded. Ideal for those who want clean photos and a little breathing room.
    • The finishing straight at Circo Massimo. The only point from which you can see the sprint. Barriers fill up quickly: for the front row, you need to be there by 17:00. The slightly further back positions on the lawn terrace are free and comfortable.
    • Piazza del Popolo. You won’t see the riders pass here, but it is the hub of the pre-finish celebration: Giroland, big screens, merchandise, entertainment. A good choice for those travelling with children or who want to enjoy the day without a packed crowd.

    A practical note: the circuit closes to vehicles well before 15:40, and public transport in the central area faces heavy diversions for most of the afternoon. Moving on foot remains the only realistic option within a couple of kilometres of the finish.

    Family Ride: cycling through Rome on Sunday morning

    Before the professional race, the Family Ride opens the day: a free, open cycling ride through the streets of Rome, open to everyone. Recent editions have attracted over 4,000 participants. Registration on the official Giro website, with departure in the morning (exact time confirmed closer to the date). It is the simplest opportunity to ride at a leisurely pace through stretches of the city that are normally impassable by bike.

    A “pink” day starting from the centre

    For guests staying in our apartments in the historic centre, 31 May is one of those days when location makes all the difference. From around Piazza Navona or the Pantheon, Piazza del Popolo is a twenty-minute walk to the north, the Fori Imperiali twenty minutes to the south-east, the Circo Massimo a good half-hour away. A possible day:

    • morning: breakfast in the neighbourhood and the Family Ride, or a walk along the Forums before everything closes off;
    • early afternoon: Giroland at Piazza del Popolo for the pre-finish celebration;
    • 16:00: take your position along the circuit (Forums or Caracalla);
    • 18:00: move towards the Circo Massimo finishing straight for the sprint;
    • evening: dinner in Trastevere or the Monti district, once the roads reopen.

    No car, no packed metro, no taxi meters: the difference between a Giro day lived breathlessly and one lived with ease is almost always your starting point.
